“Baozhong, bright zone!”

Upgraded from Taiwan Oolong since Chin Dynasty,

through a hundred years has Baozhong formed this sweet orchid scent, natural honey yellow hue in each brew.

 

Mr. Wu’s tea family traces back to ancient Chinese era.

“How long have you been making teas?”

“A lifelong time,” he answered.

 “Oolong used to be neglected by market, that’s why it’s improved into ball shape for royalty, to serve the emperors!”

Everyone can tell Mr. Wu’s love for tea at the vivid telling from him.

 

“Is it possible that I take a sneak peek at this emperor tea picking?” I was chilled.

“Here in Pinglin we pick five times a year following the weather and humidity, random visits aren’t allowed.

It’s too late today, come again tomorrow!” Typical, familiar tea master temper.

Arrived 9 a.m. the next day, I was right on time when they began tea picking.

Mr. Wu told me that “If you start too early tealeaves would be undried with morning dew;

the best time to pick is between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.,

afterwards would be too late to sun-wither, leaving the tea lack of fragrance.”

 

Observing the delicate picking for one-tip two-leaf, three-leaf, and the pickers’ art reminded me of Japanese master spirit.

They weight no less here in Taiwan, contributing this tea I preciously held.

People don’t care about “hundred years of heritage” anymore;

now the market values modern packing traditional tea shops lack of.

I was more than touched seeing how Mr. Wu has kept traditional factory, machines,

pickers and himself the decent tea technique in sixty years.

 

After a complete day in Pinglin, I’ve grown full respect to Mr. Wu’s strong will of guarding traditional teas.

Faring well to him, I promised to spread his will to each corner of the world,

for every person to enjoy the taste of ancient emperor.

It doesn’t take so many visits to merely buy a tea.

These face to face experiences are the warmth, the spirit of Taiwan I’d like to tell the world.

 

The world is never big enough when we neglect what’s beneath us, the scenery that fertilize us.
